𝐂𝐡â𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐮 𝐝𝐞 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐬 The Palace of Versailles (French: Château de Versailles) is the residence of the King of France and Navarre and his court, located in Versailles, about 18 kilometers west of Paris. Louis XIII built a hunting pavilion on the site in 1623, his son and successor, Louis XIV, expanded it into a palace that went through several expansions in phases from 1661 to 1715. It was the monarch's favorite residence and, in 1682, became the seat of his court and government, making the palace the de facto capital of the Kingdom of France.
